This is also explained by our atmosphere, similar to why boats appear to disappear over the horizon.
In images like this where the bridge does not appear to curve, there is less refraction in the atmosphere so the image is not being pulled down.
(Globe believers will say the opposite; there is more refraction causing the image to be be refracted up).
